Elton Brand’s epic whiff on kick may have set American soccer back 50 years (vid)
On Wednesday in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Steve Nash held his “Showdown” soccer event that benefited the Steve Nash Foundation. Dubbed the “Showdown in Chinatown 2012,” various dignitaries from the world of sports participated, including Philadelphia 76ers forward Elton Brand. In retrospect, my guess is Brand wish he wouldn’t have attended.
After international soccer player Salomon Kalou demonstrated some nifty footwork, he fed the ball to Brand, who was all alone near the post. Kalou couldn’t have delivered the ball any better if he walked it over and set it up on a tee, but Brand nevertheless whiffed mightily with a feeble attempt at a shot on goal. I mean, it was bad.
Granted, Brand isn’t a soccer player and perhaps has never tried playing the grand game before Wednesday night, but he is a professional athlete who does rely on footwork from time to time. At the very least, it’s reasonable to expect that he would make contact with the ball. But he did not, and now we are all afforded the opportunity to have a good laugh at his expense.
