President Obama congratulates the ‘Miami Heats’ on winning NBA title (video)
To say that President Barack Obama has had a rough few days in the area of sports-related quips during speeches would be an understatement. First, the White Sox fan inside of Obama got the better of him when he thanked a Boston crowd for the Kevin Youkilis trade, which caused the citizens of Red Sox Nation in attendance to boo vociferously. To his credit, POTUS recovered well in that instance, but he stepped right in it again during a speech at the Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater during a campaign appearance on Tuesday night.
When congratulating the recently crowned NBA champs, President Obama said, “Finally, it would be incomplete if I did not congratulate the city of Miami for having the world champion Miami Heats here in town,” adding, “You guys earned it.”
Miami Heats? Ouch. In this day and age when anything and everything a politician (or a person in the public eye, for that matter) says is overly scrutinized, it’s hardly surprising Obama’s minor verbal gaffe attracted attention. But in the end, it isn’t really that big of a deal, other than we get to spend a moment or two having a chuckle about how Obama was caught talking like most people’s grandfathers. Seriously, why do old people always stick in an extraneous “s” here and there when they speak? As in, “What’s with all the kids making such a big highfalutin deal about that Justin Biebers fella?”
