Twins draft pick from Puerto Rico moved to tears after being selected (video)
Jose Berrios was drafted 32nd by the Minnesota Twins as a compensation pick between the first and second rounds on Monday in the MLB Draft. Berrios, described as a hard-throwing, right-handed pitcher, is 18 years old and attends Papa Juan XXIII High School in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Berrios, at some kind of function with family and friends specifically arranged to celebrate this momentous event in the young man’s life, is completely overcome by the magnitude of the moment and eventually embraces are made and tears are shed. It’s quite a moment to witness.
While the MLB draft lacks the fanfare and attention that is given drafts in other pro leagues such as the NBA and NFL, that does not mean it is any less important, any less special to the kids experiencing the thrill of being drafted by a big league team. While a long road lies ahead for most of these young men before they realize their dreams of playing in the major leagues, the fact that they have taken the first, all-important step isn’t lost on them.
