Bryce Harper doused with Gatorade after first career walk-off hit (videos)
Washington Nationals rookie phenom Bryce Harper sent the team’s fans home from the park happy Tuesday night by delivering a clutch walk-off, game-winning hit in the bottom of the 12th inning for a 7-6 extra inning victory over the visiting New York Mets. The win gave the Nationals sole possession of first place in the NL East with a 31-22 record.
Following the game, Harper had this to say about his game-winner, which came with the bases loaded, two outs and Harper in the hole with an 0-2 count:
“I knew [Ramirez] didn’t want to walk me, so I knew he was going to come over the plate, but I got a pitch I could handle and threw my hands at it,” Harper said. “It was a good ‘W’ tonight. That was huge. The Mets are a great team. They are playing well right now. Everybody in the NL East is playing well. It’s still early, but to stay in first place, it’s good for us. I think coming out with the ‘W’ tonight is huge.”
Harper was predictably mobbed by teammates on the field, but received the customary, congratulatory Gatorade bath from teammate Michael Morse during a postgame interview. Video follows.

To say that Bryce Harper has taken Major League Baseball by storm would be an understatement. It certainly appears at this point that he was and will continue to be well worth the hype he generated before cracking the Nationals big league roster.
No word on whether hitting the game-winning single “hurt like a dick” though. Somehow I doubt it.
