Minor leaguers collide midair, both go over fence, one still makes catch (video)
In one of the more amazing catches you’ll likely ever see, Austin Wates and Brandon Barnes, teammates on the Corpus Christi (Texas) Hooks of the Double-A Texas League, a minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros, both make bids to prevent a deep shot by Nathan Frieman from clearing the fence. As the two converge upon the ball, they both make a leap for it, only to have a midair collision before toppling over the fence.
Despite Wates getting tangled up with Barnes and subsequently going over the left-center field wall, he somehow miraculously manages to retain possession of the ball after it improbably ended up on his glove, robbing Frieman of a home run and providing an unbelievable highlight sure to receive plenty of attention in the coming days.
Wates provides his take on the amazing grab he made (via the Caller-Times of Corpus Christi, by way of Big League Stew):
“We were both kind of tracking it and I heard someone in the bullpen scream ‘Fence!’ and someone else screamed ‘Jump!’ ” Wates told Greg Rajan of the Caller-Times after the game. “Instinctively, I did it. I knew I could catch it, but didn’t know how close the fence was. I ended up flipping over and kind of landed on Barnes and looked in my glove and I had (the ball).”
