Front page of Philly Daily News: Sidney Crosby as the ‘The Cowardly Penguin’ (pic)
Well, there you go. Obviously, there is no love lost between the city of Philadelphia — from its sports fans to players on the Philadelphia Flyers — and Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby. In fact, Crosby went so far as to say he doesn’t like a single player on the Flyers following an especially chippy Game 3 of the teams’ Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series, which included the rare sight of Crosby dropping the gloves and fighting Claude Giroux. This display of pugilism by Crosby was all for naught, though, as the outcome of the 8-4 drubbing by the Flyers left the Penguins on the brink of elimination heading into Game 4, down three games to zilch.
With Game 4 Wednesday night in Philly, the Philadelphia Daily News elected to have a little fun with Crosby and how a city that backs the Flyers is inclined to view Crosby’s Game 3 antics as the antithesis of bravery, by way of superimposing Crosby’s head on top of the body of The Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz for its front page and referring to Crosby as “The Cowardly Penguin” and adding that it is “Time To Finish Off Sniveling Sidney.”
Check and mate. Although it would have worked much better had Pittsburgh’s hockey team been named, you know, the Lions. Hey, you work with what you got, but for what it’s worth, the Philly Daily News could have superimposed Crosby’s head on top of harmless penguin, Chilly Willy. That way the penguin angle is covered and moreover, that little, adorable rapscallion couldn’t hurt a fly. Win win, really.
