Wild player gets high-sticked, winds up with stick stuck in helmet’s earhole (video)
Well, that’s certainly odd.
Midway through the third period of game between the Minnesota Wild and the Florida Panthers, Wild defenseman Tom Gilbert was the victim of a high stick courtesy of Panthers winger Kris Versteeg. What transpired after the initial act of committing the penalty is something I have never seen: somehow, Versteeg’s stick blade got jammed through the earhole in Gilbert’s helmet and exited out under his visor.
At one point, it appeared the stick blade was pressing down quite forcibly on Gilbert’s nose, but in the end, Gilbert was no worse for wear, the Wild staged a comeback late in the third period as they tied it up 2-2 on Eric Christensen’s goal with 30 seconds remaining and ultimately won the game 3-2 on a quick goal by captain Mikko Koivu with only 15 seconds into overtime. On Minnesota North Stars Night, no less.
Now excuse me while I continue to be incredibly bitter about the North Stars leaving. Yes, even after all these years, it still stings.
