Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon to shave head for charity
At 11:30 a.m. next Thursday on the boardwalk outside Tropicana Field, Tampa Bay Rays skipper Joe Maddon’s flowing locks will be no more as he recently announced that he will shave his head to raise funds for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and the Vincent Lecavalier Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at All Children’s Hospital. He also stated that he intends to convince other members of the Rays organization, already signing on bench coach Dave Martinez and third base coach Tom Foley.
Maddon said this about his soon-to-be new hairdo: “It’s under the heading, fortune favors the bald” and he encourages fans to make donations here through May 4.
It’s funny, I never realized this until now, but Maddon’s hairstyle is ever-changing and rarely stays the same for long. It’s like he’s a chameleon. A chameleon with hair, which brings to mind a odd image. But really, sometimes his hair appears longer an ill-kept as it does now, sometimes it’s gray and clean cut, other times it appears darker. And who can forget the troubling goth phase he went through in August, 2009? Those were some dark times for the guy.
