Power forward’s buzzer-beating three-pointer clinches girls’ state title (video)
With 5.9 seconds left on the clock and her team down 53-52, Florida A&M University (Fla.) High power forward Lekaris Salter inbounded the ball to a teammate, took the return pass and niftily rumbled, bumbled and stumbled her way through defenders across center court. From there, she dribbled down to the three-point arc and heaved up a prayer. Lo and behold, it went in, propelling Salters and her teammates into a mad frenzy as they celebrated a state championship with an incredibly 55-53 victory over Hollywood (Fla.) Christian School. Not bad for a young lady who spends most of her time in the offensive end under the basket.
Said Salters, who is referred to as “Big Ticket” by her head coach, about her unlikely status as long-distance sharpshooter (via Prep Rally):
“What was going through my head was last year I had a chance for a game-winning shot against Rickards (and missed),” Salter said. “Then I thought about Austin Rivers and the shot against North Carolina. Then, I just ran and everyone tackled me and I couldn’t breathe.”
Of course, Salters is referring to Duke freshman Austin Rivers’ buzzer-beater against the Tar Heels in early February.
Perhaps what is most interesting about the play is Hollywood Christian had two fouls to give and apparently attempting to foul Salter as she stormed up the court. Must have been her under-appreciated agility that helped her elude contact. Once again, not bad for a gal who’s more large and in charge than silky and smooth.
