Cool: Dean Smith’s recruiting letter to Michael Jordan, circa Sept. 30, 1980 (Pic)
Now that is one piece of North Carolina basketball history right there. Fittingly, given it is a piece of North Carolina basketball history, the letter from then-Tar Heels head coach Dean Smith to Mr. and Mrs. James Jordan and Michael is housed at the Carolina Basketball Museum, where such relics should be placed.
A pic of MJ’s signed National Letter of Intent follows below.
Wow. And to think what ultimately was set in motion courtesy of Smith’s visit to a young MJ on that day so many years ago and the fact that Jordan signed that letter of intent. Not just basketball history, but a global pop cultural phenomenon not limited to the arenas of professional sport. Crazy.
And it’s a pretty good thing Smith was such a convincing salesman, otherwise Jordan might have switched gears entirely and opted instead to pursue a career in baseball.
That never would have occurred, right? Right?
