(Photo) Despite Trade, ‘Jim Thome Wind-Up Walker Night’ To Go On As Planned
In a bit of bad timing, it will be “Jim Thome Wind-Up Walker” giveaway night at Target Field on Friday night when the Minnesota Twins take on the Detroit Tigers. Unfortunately, the man of the hour will not be present during the night’s festivities where the first 10,000 fans will receive one of the little gizmos that bears his likeness, as Jim Thome waived his no-trade clause and the Twinkies dealt him back to his first major league team, the Cleveland Indians.
The Twins organization was kind enough to pass along an image of the wind-up walker to my fellow Twin Citian Michael Rand at RandBall with the message that plan is to go on with the giveaway. While Thome might be gone, Twins fans can hold on to the memories. And 10,000 of them can hold on to one of the above little souvenir playthings.
One last thing: when I first heard about “Jim Thome Wind-Up Walker Night,” I seriously figured that it would be some kind of toy featuring Jim Thome standing with the assistance of a walker and that when you wound it up, it would amble about at a sluggish pace akin to how Thome lumbers around the the base paths. Thankfully, the above image cleared that one up for me.
