NHL To Bruins’ Zdeno Chara: ‘No Coke. Pepsi.’

“Cheeseburger! Cheeseburger! Cheeseburger!” The National Hockey League has sent a memo to Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara that under no uncertain terms should he ever again drink a Coke on the bench during a game. Chara was captured by cameras having a Coke and a smile on the bench during Game 7 of the Bruins’ series against the Montreal Canadiens. The NHL’s issue with Chara imbibing on Coca-Cola? No, not concern over him getting cavities. It has everything to do with the league’s sponsorship by a little soft drink company named Pepsi. Yeah.

Chara appears to understand the conflict of interest inherent to drinking the competitor’s soda, yet claims drinking a Coke was something of an anomaly and doesn’t expect it to happen again. Via

“I got a few messages from my friends, ‘What are you doing? We saw you on TV.’ In that situation, you don’t really think what’s allowed or not allowed, you’re just trying to get something for you,” Chara told QMI.

Chara said he had asked for the soft drink because it had exactly what he needed at the time.

“Sugar and a little caffeine. I felt like I needed some sugar and something bubbly. I asked for a Coke. I usually don’t drink Coke at all. I have a Coke maybe once a month. I just felt like I should try it as an energy booster, quickly, you get the boost really quickly from a little caffeine. I know a lot of guys do that. Some guys like to drink it before the game. Sometimes during a game.”

Well, Mr. Chara, if you get the hankering for a carbonated, sugary beverage during any games in the future, it would be advisable to stick to only Pepsi products. After all, they are a much tastier beverage to begin with – especially when used to wash down a Cheeseburger! Cheeseburger! Cheeseburger!

Note: for you young whippersnappers who have no idea what I am referring to with the Cheeseburger! reference, it is of course from a classic sketch on Saturday Night Live from way back before you were born: “The Olympia Cafe” featuring the late, great John Belushi, video of which I have included below for your viewing pleasure.

Ha. Classic.
