Great Moments In NCAA March Madness (Sponsored By Muscle Milk): NC State, 1983
This moment of madness brought to you by Muscle Milk®. It’s powerful protein. Drink. Evolve™
When I was approached by Muscle Milk and asked if I would like to write something about a great moment from over the years of NCAA Tournament March Madness, at first, I was overwhelmed by the many options I would be able to select from for this post. But after giving it some thought, I realized that perhaps no single moment from March Madness history better justifies the belief that if you become the best YOU that you can be, anything can happen better than North Carolina State University Wolfpack’s magical run to the 1983 NCAA Championship.
Led by the late, great Jim Valvano, N.C. State, dubbed The Cardiac Pack due to the team’s habit of narrowly eking out victories, shocked the world and have an integral role in how the potential for the Next NCAA Tournament Cinderella Story captivates college basketball fans to this day.
After a great run in the ACC Tournament which ended with N.C. State as the winning squad – the Wolfpack was awarded with the sixth seed in the East Region and it didn’t take long for the team to earn The Cardiac Pack moniker, as it took double overtime for NC State to win their first round game over Pepperdine 69-67. Next up were the Running Rebels of UNLV, which were barely held off by Valvano and company 71-70. Then Utah fell to the Wolfpack in the Sweet Sixteen. And then Virginia in the Elite Eight. N.C. State finally punched their ticket for the Championship Game by defeating Georgia 67-60. Finally, the Cinderella Team had their chance to seize their moment in history against one of the better college basketball teams assembled in recent memory: Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and the rest of the famed Phi Slamma Jamma Houston Cougars.
The finale of what many call one of the greatest games in NCAA Tournament history:
After watching that ending a multitude of times, it still has the ability to elicit goosebumps. And isn’t that what great moments are all about?
Many thanks to Muscle Milk for sponsoring this nostalgic trip back into NCAA Tourney lore. Remember, Muscle Milk will “help you become the best YOU that you can be.”
