ESPN’s Latest ‘It’s Not Crazy, It’s Sports’ Commercial Is Doubly Dim-Witted

It’s funny because it’s just like those old Doublemint Gum commercials from back in the day. You know, the ones with all the twins and stuff. Double. Twins. Get it? And in case you were too dim-witted to realize that little nugget of nostalgia, the press release spells it out for you in easy-to-chew, spearaminty clarity (via ESPN Media Zone):

Today, Monday, Jan. 3, ESPN premieres the latest promotional spot from the “It’s Not Crazy, It’s Sports” campaign with a commercial featuring tennis doubles champions and twins, Bob and Mike Bryan.  The spot, a playful homage to the classic “Doublemint Gum” commercials from the 1980s, will air across ESPN’s television networks.

Thanks, ESPN, for bastardizing and co-opting another pleasant memory from my youth. Nah, just kidding. I was more of a Juicy Fruit kind of guy.

I hope this little ad indicates a brave, new, yet somewhat a throwback direction in ESPN advertising. I eagerly look forward to some ThunderCats or Slip-N-Slide references in the future, although I have no idea how those Madison Avenue hotshots are going to incorporate those into an ESPN commercial. But hey, I’m not the one making the big bucks.
