Willie Mays Called In Sick For His Ceremonial First Pitch Appearance
While I doubt many fans in San Francisco are dwelling on it in the aftermath of the Giants’ big win over the Rangers last night, it is somewhat disappointing that living legend Willie Mays was not present to take part in the ceremonial first pitch due to illness.
Of course, the show had to go on, and in his absence, Orlando Cepeda, Monte Irvin, Juan Marichal, Willie McCovey and Gaylord Perry – respected Giants players of yore in their own right – participated in the first pitch ceremony sans the Say Hey Kid.
Let’s hope that Mr. Mays is feeling better today and if he is still feeling under the weather, here’s to a speedy recovery. Although I am a bit suspicious whether he was really sick or simply did not want to be at the stadium, in light of this wacky promotion. I’m not trying to spread any outlandish rumors, but you never know. I provide this photo as Exhibit A for the basis of my suspicions. Just saying.
