60 Minutes Correspondent Steve Kroft Loves Him Some 1-On-1 Drew Brees Action
Question: how does one, even as accomplished of a journalist as longtime 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft, go about carrying out an insightful, provocative and competent interview when the whole time the reporter is on his knees, genuflecting at the feet of his subject? Although I should point out that Kroft insists he went down to New Orleans looking for some dirt on the Saints quarterback.
Either way, I guess we’ll have to wait and see until Sunday, when Kroft’s profile of St. Drew, Patron Saint of the New Orleans, Keeper of the Levees, airs on the season premiere of 60 Minutes, because if his statements to the Times-Picayune are any indication, Kroft might have himself a bit of a non-sexual, schoolboy crush on the One and True Savior of the City of New Orleans.
To wit (via NOLA.com):
“He’s a very unlikely character, ” Kroft said. “You hardly ever see a picture of him without his helmet on. It’s not like he’s Peyton Manning or Brett Favre yet. In the public circle, people are just getting to know him.
“He’s really hard on himself, ” Kroft said. “That was the one thing that everybody told us. We did this thing after practice one day where he was throwing at the goal post, about 30 yards away. He thought he could hit it two out of five times, and he ended up only hitting it one time out of five. He was so (mad). I said, ‘I don’t want you to lose any sleep over this.’ He said, ‘I know, but I will.'”
“It’s just a great sports story, ” Kroft said. “At a time when you’ve got former and current NFL superstars serving time and suspensions for really egregious behavior, and in some cases criminal behavior, this story of Brees and New Orleans (says) it’s not all bad.”
Drew Brees: not only the Savior of New Orleans but the Holy Redeemer of the National Football League. Not half-bad for some guy from Purdue.
And hell, just for the fun of it, I was poking around the 60 Minutes‘ website to see if I could find some preview video of the Brees profile just to see if the interview was performed face-to-face, in separate chairs or if Brees and Kroft snuggled up together under a comfy quilt on one of those papasans when I came across this Andy Rooney video where the old bastard complains about not having any idea who these damn musicians, like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, that all the kids are listening to these days with their newfangled Walkmans, boomboxes and ePads and what have you.
