Like ESPN says, “It’s Not Crazy. It’s Sports.” With nerds. Lots and lots of nerds.

ESPN Commercial Features True Story of Ole Miss and Admiral Ackbar of Rebel Alliance

A short time ago, in a land not so far away, the Ole Miss Rebels faced the tall task of selecting a new on-field mascot. A group of industrious and passionate students nominated and campaigned for Admiral Ackbar – the decorated commander of the Rebel Alliance fleet from Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. In the latest spot from ESPN’s brand campaign, “It’s Not Crazy, It’s Sports,” ESPN takes a closer look at this unique and true story.

In addition to 30- and 60-second TV spots, ESPN has created a four-minute, in-depth video. The TV spot debuted during the Boise State vs. Virginia Tech game Sept. 6, and the longer version will be available via ESPN’s YouTube channel. The commercial will receive support through promotional banners on ESPN.com that will lead fans to the long-form video.

The beauty of it all is this story illustrates how we are that much closer to living in a society where nerds and jocks can cohabitate on college campuses in peace, but only as long as they can agree to choose a fictional character from a beloved sci-fi movie as their college’s mascot, which is not likely to happen any time soon. You know, maybe I’m wrong and we really aren’t any closer to this particular vision of a Utopian college society at all than we were before the Great Ackbar Movement. I guess we should simply heed the lessons taught in Revenge of the Nerds and leave it at that. Especially as they pertain to the wonders of hair pie and how beer is a perfectly appropriate liquid to pour on your Cheerios.
