Shaq’s Mom Will Motivate You, She Will Motivate The Crap Out Of You

Lucile O’Neal (she’s the one on the right), the mother of Shaquille O’Neal, has written a motivational book with the annoyingly self-helpy title Walk Like You Have Somewhere to Go: From Mental Welfare to Mental Wealth.

“I’m encouraging people and I’m telling them in some cases that it’s not the end of your world,” she said, sitting courtside as the Bucks warmed up a few feet away. “I’m just telling people to be strong. A lot of people today are visual, they can almost look into my life when they read the book and say, ‘Well, if she got through all of that, and she’s doing as good as she’s doing, then there’s hope for me.”

Also motivational about her life: that she gave birth to a 67-pound baby and lived to tell the tale, although she still does walk extremely bowlegged to this day. I’m just kidding. Shaq was only 32 pounds when he was born.

She also has a name that rhymes, which is a huge plus when marketing a book.

Her son – who is currently injured and not playing – sat with her at Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday as she signed copies of her book prior to the Cleveland Cavaliers-Milwaukee Bucks game. And believe you me, he’s proud of everything his mom has accomplished, from having Shaq when she was only a teenager to winning her battle with alcohol abuse.

“I’m very proud,” he said. “She has always been the one who I’ve called the remote controller of my life. A lot of times when I’m sitting and not doing anything she’ll call me and say, ‘You know you need to go to school. You know you need to get your master’s (degree). You know I don’t like what you said on TV. You know you need to get your doctorate.’

A Dr. Shaq? Nah, a world with a Shaquille O’Neal, PhD is just too crazy of a world to live in if you ask me. But I really think he should get back into acting. The guy has got a gift.
