Sports Writer Ohm Youngmisuk Trying To Make A Name For Himself With Fluff Pieces On Mark Sanchez’s Parents
Ha ha! Get it? Ohm Youngmisuk is trying to make a name for himself? You know, because he has kind of a funny-sounding name? Youmgmisuk? Not doing anything for you? Whatever. Screw you guys.
Although we didn’t need these two stories to confirm the trend that during the NFL playoffs, sports writers often feel compelled to scrape the bottom of the barrel to come up with an angle regarding the upcoming games that provides a unique look that hasn’t already been discussed ad nauseum during the week.
As the Jets prepare for their game with the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, Mr. Youngmisuk hit the mother lode with his story about quarterback Mark Sanchez’s number one fan – his momma. Youngmisuk next hit the – father lode? – with a story published simultaneously on the Daily News‘ website about Sanchez’s fireman dad.
In his column entitled, “Momma’s boy! New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez’s No. 1 fan is his mother – Olga Macias,” Youngmisuk’s profile of Sanchez’s mama highlights her love and devotion to her son, including how she is often brought to tears of happiness regarding her son’s accomplishments and how she is also brought to tears – not of happiness at these times – when her son is criticized harshly.
“It is just hard to explain,” a beaming Macias told the Daily News. “It has all panned out. To see it all happen, wow, there are no words. I don’t know what to say, I want to cry.
Youngmisuk, in the column, “Quarterback Mark Sanchez tries to save New York Jets while dad, Nick Sanchez, tries to save lives,” characterizes Sanchez’s fireman father, Nick, as a no-nonsense kind of guy that nevertheless would have done just about anything to support his son in the quest to become an NFL quarterback.
It wasn’t that long ago that Sanchez’s father was leaving his pickup truck running with the high beams shining to light a nearby park so that his son could keep practicing his throws and working on his footwork. Throwing to his older brothers, Nick Jr. and Brandon, as he dropped back into a four-foot hoop made out of irrigation hose and resetting his quarterback stance, Sanchez spent countless hours preparing for a game such as Sunday’s against the Chargers.
To be honest, the stories are interesting, Nick and Olga appear to be terrific parents, loving and supportive, and are ecstatic for how much their son has accomplished through football: for himself, for his family and for his culture.
But I think we can all agree what’s most important about these stories: the further progression of the writing career of one Mr. Ohm Youngmisuk. Despite his unique name, he appears to be a gifted writer. You know, maybe I shouldn’t have devoted any time on his name. For one thing, it could be considered culturally insensitive. Secondly, it downgrades the quality of his writing.
So for that, I apologize.
Wait, one more thing.
Sorry. I just couldn’t help myself.
