Vernon Davis Is A Helluva Curler?
San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis decided to try his hand at curling earlier this month at the practice facility of the San Jose Sharks with members of the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club, and apparently had a blast doing so, saying “I didn’t think it would be this much fun.”
Then, the San Francisco 49ers tight end watched as Brian Zaitz glided down his lane of ice holding a lunge position and released a 42 1/2-pound granite stone with precision and touch, something that comes with years of curling at a high level.
“Whooo, that’s work right there. You guys really got to be strong,” cracked Davis, known for his exceptional athleticism. “I don’t see how you can get into this right here. I couldn’t do it.”
The experienced curlers Davis practiced with were impressed at how quickly he picked up the sport, although I wonder if they were just being nice to him. He is 6’3″ and 250 pounds. No reason to get a guy that size angry. Especially if 49ers head coach Mike Singletary isn’t there to lay a verbal smackdown to put Davis in his place.
You know, I would like to try curling one day as well. I figure all I need is a lobotomy and some tights. Wait, that’s wrestling (as well as a totally weak Breakfast Club reference). Um, what do you need to curl? A rock, a broom and some well-meaning and friendly Canadians, right? They can’t be hard to find. Canadians are a friendly people and are to be trusted, from what I understand.
