Style Points Agrees With Deadspin Who Agrees That Today Is A Slow News Day

Style Points

How very meta of me. Or something. My brain hurts.

Hey guys at Style Points, you all rule.

I’d like to use Nash Landesman’s Deadspin post from today to illustrate what bloggers often resort to on a slow news day when they’re contractually obligated to file.

They republish entire articles including captions for pictures that didn’t copy with everything else.

Brace yourselves for today’s reprint of Friday’s 100-point topic, “Comebacks we don’t want to see:”

“I’d like to use LZ Granderson’s Page 2 column from yesterday to illustrate what journalists—Mark Whicker included—often resort to on a slow news day when they’re contractually obligated to file.

They rattle off lists. Lists which are often arranged under a premise so broad that writers can slap down literally any random thought and make it work.

Brace yourselves for Friday’s 100-point topic, “Comebacks we don’t want to see:”

100. Bling. I don’t know if it’s the NBA dress code, the rash of athletes being targeted for robberies or the fashion pendulum swinging away from Mr. T and more toward common sense. I’m just happy bling — the noun and the adjective — has lost its shine.

99. Prohibition

98. Men wearing toe rings

97. Bill Romanowski

96. Rickey Henderson

95. Winger

94. Warrant

93. Whitesnake

92. Any other big-hair ’80s band that started with “W”

89. Sanjaya

88. Ross Perot

Bill Romanowski
Bill Romanowski was linked to the BALCO scandal, viciously punched a teammate and spit on an opponent. Spare us an encore.

85. Red, yellow and other brightly colored Levis.

84. John Edwards

83. John Daly

82. “Star Wars”

We can only hope Rod Blagojevich doesn’t follow Tom DeLay’s path to “Dancing with the Stars.”

56. Freddy

55. Michael

54. The Boz

38. “It’s a black thing; you wouldn’t understand”

37. Walkmans

32. “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” (see No. 35)

31. Latrell Sprewell

What just happened there? And who left this nitrous tank in my living room? Oh well, shouldn’t let it go to waste.
