To Be Fair, Professors Who Teach Geology Are Notorious For Being Jerks

A geology professor at Colorado University is between a rock and a hard place due to his calling out of senior linebacker Marcus Burton in class regarding the team’s poor play.

Burton said his geology professor told the class: “You people may think this class is boring. We’re just talking about rocks. But it’s no more boring than both the CU games. Marcus, you’re a captain. Can you tell us about that?”

Oooh, burn! Although it should be pointed out that the professor might have had a point: the Buffaloes are now 0-2 on the season, including a 54-38 drubbing by Toledo last weekend.

Unfortunately, the professor, whose name was not revealed, and his mean-spirited ribbing isn’t being looked at too fondly by Lang Farmer, the chair of the Geology department at CU. In an e-mail where he expressed dismay that a member of his faculty would take a shot at a student, issued this statement:

“The hope is that after such, both faculty and student can get back to the business of education, which, I hope most would agree, is the only business with which my department should be concerned. . . .

“It is important to emphasize that the department and University have a clear policy that faculty have a responsibility to treat students with ‘understanding, dignity, and respect,’ and we take that very seriously. As best as I have been able to reconstruct, events did not transpire exactly as related in the article, but I’m still working to assess whether what did happen was a clear violation of university policy.”

It’s about time someone took a stand on behalf of college athletes and the horrible conditions they are forced to endure at our institutions of higher learning simply because they participate in sports. Farmer is refusing to sit on his hands and is choosing to deal with this issue head-on: he is coming down hard on the professor, demanding that an apology will be necessary. Ouch!

We can all learn a valuable lesson from this situation: never cross the chair of a geology department at a major university. If you think plate tectonics can exert an incredible amount of pressure, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
