The Top Seeds Are Still Dropping Like Flies At The U.S. Open
Add Elena Dementieva to growing list of higher seeded ladies making a quick exit from the U.S. Open. Seventeen-year-old U.S. phenom Melanie Oudin (USA! USA! USA!) (left) fought through a thigh injury, even fighting back tears at some points, and defeated number four seed Elena Dementieva (right) 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round, obviously the biggest upset of the tournament thus far. Her path from this point forward doesn’t look like it’s going to get any easier.
Her next match will be against 29th-seeded Maria Sharapova or Christina McHale, another 17-year-old American.
“I don’t even know what to say right now,” Oudin said. “I’m so excited. You have no idea.”
Congratulations, Miss Oudin. Your future looks bright. And farewell, Elena. We’re going to miss you a whole bunch.
It just occurred to me that I should do a photo retrospective every time a good looking gal gets ousted from the tournament. It will be kind of like on the Oscars when they list all the people that died the preceding year, except it will require far less tissues. Maybe.
