Big Ben Likes Dogs
HARF! HARF! Ben Roethlisberger, through his creatively-named Ben Roethlisberger Foundation, has donated $8,000 to the Jeannette Police Department to assist in the care of service dog Wando, a German Shepherd who has been with the department since 2005.
So, why the philanthropic (or as he refers to it, “periodontic”) interest in the care of animals, Ben?
“My dad instilled in me a love and respect for animals,” Roethlisberger said on his foundation’s Web site. “This is a good way to combine that passion with a desire to support the police and fire departments, which deserve all the appropriate resources needed to protect our cities and neighborhoods, and allow these brave men and women to arrive home safely.”
Police chief Jeff Stahl sincerely appreciates the donation, as the department will now be “able to acquire this money for the upkeep of our dog,” without having “to request the money from the city.”
Wando the German Shepherd usually walks the beat with Officer Justin Scalzo, who met Roethlisberger previously at a youth football camp.
“He is a real big supporter of police canines,” Scalzo said of Roethlisberger. “He has a real good heart for him to do this.”
“It was great to spend five minutes with him,” Stahl added. “It was nice to see that he could spend time with kids and take a few minutes with us.”
The meeting was captured by television cameras for a syndicated program through EA Sports slated to run in August.
You know, as hard as I try, I cannot find one fault in Roethlisberger’s choice of charitable pursuits. And that bothers me greatly, as I am an incredibly cynical bastard.
Damn you, Ben Roethlisberger! You shall rue the day that you did not incur the wrath borne from my warped and smug sense of superiority!
