At This Rate, The Champions of The Ayrshire, Iowa Senior Horseshoes League Will Be Guests At The White House By Mid-August
Despite our many political differences, affiliations and philosophies, one thing I think all of us can agree upon is that President Barack Obama is a huge sports fan and he will always make time for championship sports teams. Case in point: Obama welcomed the North Carolina Tar Heels Men’s Basketball team to the Southern Lawn of the White House today so he could congratulate the team on their national championship, a trend that doesn’t appear likely to die down any time soon.
“Welcome to the White House and congratulations,” Obama said after emerging from the White House at 2:11 p.m. It took only two minutes to get to his real message:
“More importantly,” he said, “thanks for salvaging my bracket and vindicating me in the eyes of everyone.”
Oh sure, North Carolina – you can save the President’s bracket but you couldn’t lose to Oklahoma in the regional finals to save my ass, huh? What gives?
Perhaps the most entertaining aspect of the meet and greet was the fact that Reggie Love, who was a member of the 2001 Duke team that won the national championship, is Obama’s personal assistant.
Obama noted the rivalry, saying that everyone on his staff was excited about the team’s arrival — except maybe Love.
“He wants to scrimmage with you guys,” Obama said. “We’ll arrange that.”
There is no doubt that Obama believes it to be very important to commend teams that perservere and excel in their respective sports, because according to my half-assed research (I don’t have time nor the inclination to do any further research – remember, I’m a blogger and no other bloggers are policing Sportress of Blogitude, nor is anyone holding me accountable for anything I post, so who gives a shit, right Jason Whitlock?); since taking office, President Obama has hosted the UConn women’s basketball team, the Navy football team, the Florida Gators, the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies (if I have missed one, please let me know).
That’s a lot of teams in a little more than four months, but I imagine there aren’t many better ways for a President to ingratiate himself to a sports-loving nation than to make sure everyone is aware that he is a huge sports fan right along with them.
