Ejected Savannah Bananas coach dons catcher’s mask, mocks ump (vids)

The Savannah Bananas, a recently formed team playing in the Coastal Plain League, identify themselves as “not like your typical baseball team.” Sean West, the team’s head coach, proved that beyond a doubt with his antics at a recent game.

The Bananas, founded in 2016, play in the Coastal Plain League, which is hailed as “featuring the top college players from around the country.” And evidently, madcap antics.

West evidently was ejected after a confrontation with the home-plate ump — details are somewhat murky in light of an unclear accounting of the incident on social media — and proceeded to go to great lengths to mock said umpire.

Donning what appears to be a catcher’s mask, West set up shop behind a catcher and appeared to mock and ridicule his adversary by pantomiming calling balls and strikes in an over-the-top manner while interrupting a live at-bat.

Bananas pitcher Bryan Cruse also documented the outrageously hilarious scene from his vantage point in the dugout.

Suffice to say, the Bananas approach the whole organized baseball thing with an eccentric bent. A tour of the team’s official site establishes that notion to a significant degree.

And here’s what might as well be called the organization’s default mission statement:

We are not like your typical baseball team. We are different. We take chances. We toe the line. We test the rules. We challenge the way things are suppose to be.

We think there’s a better way to do almost everything. So we will try it all. Some people may think we’re crazy. But we are okay with that. No matter what, we just want to have fun. We are driven by this goal to make baseball fun. And ultimately give fans the best possible experience at our ballpark. We call this Fans First.

And how. To wit, here are two recent dispatches from the team’s official Twitter account:

Uh, there you go. Let’s just say you could call the team’s entire approach to baseball to be, well, bananas.
