Kevin Durant doesn’t think Rihanna ‘really watches basketball’

Kevin Durant and Rihanna became involved in a side story during the NBA Finals after the pop star engaged in perceived trash talk during Game 1 from her courtside seat at Oracle Arena.

The notion of a supposed beef between Golden State Warriors superstar and Rihanna became a talking point throughout the Finals, albeit an arguably silly one.

Among the incidents that fueled the fire, as it were, included Durant appearing to stare down the pop star after draining a three-pointer during the Warriors’ 113-91 Game 1 win. Rihanna also appeared to taunt Durant during a free throw and later cussed out a Warriors fan after the game (more on the onset of the entire “feud,” including video, here).

When it was all said and done, though, Rihanna had to eat crow over her rabid support of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers after her favorite player and squad were dispatched convincingly in five games.

So much so, in fact, Rihanna took to social media to troll herself over the Cavaliers’ humbling elimination, including incorporating the Crying Jordan meme and a “Lion King” reference.

The question remains, though, why Rihanna is such a passionate backer of the Cavaliers. According to Durant, it’s alone due to her love for LeBron, not basketball.

Durant humorously addressed the Rihanna angle during an appearance Wednesday on “The Bill Simmons Podcast.”

The entire conversation, as transcribed by The Ringer:

Simmons: No Rihanna text?

Durant: Nah.

Simmons: Why does she like Cavs so much? Where did that come from?

Durant: She loves LeBron!

Simmons: OK.

Durant: She’s been a big LeBron fan for a long time. Everywhere he went, she’s just a big fan. I don’t even really think she really watches basketball.

Simmons: Does that mean she’s a front-runner? ’Cause LeBron’s been the best player in the world for 10 years.

Durant: That’s what basketball’s about, attaching yourself to players.

And there you have it. Consider the matter closed.
