Agent: Adam Jones won’t ‘let up’ in fighting racism at ballparks

Adam Jones’ agent says the Baltimore Orioles outfielder is “not going to let up” on imploring Major League Baseball to improve its policies to better combat racist behavior by fans in its ballparks.

Jones was subjected to racist slurs and had a bag of peanuts thrown at him during Monday’s game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Jones was treated to a standing ovation during Tuesday’s game at Fenway.

Jones admitted after the game to being surprised by the reception.

The gesture obviously was appreciated by Jones, but that won’t stop him from demanding that Major League Baseball do more to halt demonstrations of racism in all its form at its ballparks.

“We are not going to let up on this one until we see implemented policies put in place in every city to protect these players and stop this type of reckless behavior,” read a statement issued by Nez Balelo, Jones’ agent, to FOX Sports on Wednesday.

The incidents received near-universal condemnation within baseball, with the Red Sox issuing a public apology and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred saying in a statement the behavior was “completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated at any of our ballparks.”

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon and New York Yankees skipper Joe Girardi also called for tougher, no-nonsense action on offenders who engage in racially intolerant behavior.

Jones’ statement similarly expressed the need for a zero-tolerance policy.

“There needs to be a ‘Zero Tolerance’ rule put in place across MLB to punish people that are going to act this way,” Balelo said. “We need to set a precedent now that this will NOT be tolerated and if you are caught breaking this rule — throwing objects onto the field or saying demeaning racial slurs directed to a player — there will be harsh consequences to pay for this behavior.

“I have been Adam Jones’ agent for the past 10 years and have lived and experienced this type of behavior with him throughout the years. It has to stop and stop NOW.”
