Report: Rory McIlroy, Erica Stoll to wed this weekend in Ireland
Rory McIlroy said after the Masters he would be a married man before teeing off at The Players Championship in May. It looks as if that may indeed be the case.
“I am excited,” McIlroy said following the major, where he tied for seventh place. “It’s a great time in my life and it would have been nice to walk down the aisle in the green jacket!
“It’s a great time in our lives and it’s all about that over the next couple of weeks and I’ll come back at the Players refreshed and a married man and start a new chapter in my life.”
And now a report has surfaced that corroborates McIlroy’s original claim.
Per a report from The Belfast Telegraph, McIlroy and Erica Stoll will hold their wedding ceremony Saturday in Belfast, Ireland, at Ashford Castle in Cong, Co Mayo.
McIlroy and Stoll, a former PGA of America employee, first met at the Ryder Cup in 2012 and began dating in 2015, getting engaged later that same year.
A veritable who’s who among golf elite are expected to attend the nuptials, which are already being touted as the “wedding of the decade.”
McIlroy of course was previously engaged to tennis superstar Caroline Wozniacki, but their wedding was abruptly called off amid rumors that the golfer didn’t conduct himself in the most dignified of ways, allegedly breaking things off with Wozniacki on the phone after wedding invitations had already been sent out.
In the aftermath of the stunning breakup — among the biggest stories in sports in 2014 — McIlroy admitted he wasn’t ready to be married.
Given the McIlroy-Stoll wedding reportedly is only days away, the hope is this time around things will go off without a hitch.
