Mike Gundy will lead Oklahoma State into Bedlam for a showdown with rival Oklahoma on Saturday and none other than Billy Ray Cyrus is pulling for a Cowboys victory due to the head coach’s magnificent and much-praised mullet.

Fittingly dubbed The Gundy Mullet, the outrageous hairstyle has become an absolute sensation not only in Stillwater but throughout college football country, attracting the attention and praise of Cyrus, who once wrote a song singing the praises of the down-home ‘do called “I Want My Mullet Back.”

In other words, count the country crooner among those captivated by The Gundy Mullet Mania.

“Coach Gundy rockin’ the mullet? Yeah, shows class … and brass!” said Cyrus, via ESPN. “More importantly, he’s a great coach. He has inspired me. The team inspires me. I hope they run the table.”

Cowboys players and assistant coaches as well have rallied around The Gundy Mullet, with some suggesting it played a role in the team’s seven-game winning streak into Saturday’s Big 12 title-deciding game, referring to it as providing “mojo” and possessing “swag.”

And how.

Gundy’s history with mullet goes back to his playing days at Oklahoma State in the 1980s. But he decided to rock the style once again after his youngest son Gage began giving him grief over it this past summer.

“I said to him, ‘If you keep bothering me, I’m not going to cut it.’” Gundy said. “Now, I’m kind of enjoying it.”

And so is everyone else, including the head coach who will be standing across the field this weekend at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Bob Stoops.

“Heck, it’s growing on me through the year, through the season,” Stoops said of The Gundy Mullet. “Maybe wasn’t such a fan early on.

“But I’ve come to like it.”

Stoops is not the only one.

While Stoops’ praise of the mullet is all well and good, not to mention perhaps a bit flattering for Gundy, it cannot top receiving a shout-out from one of the world’s foremost mullet experts, Mr. Cyrus.

Business up front and party in the back and all that stuff. In other words, keep letting your Freak Flag fly, Coach Gundy.
