Mike Tyson: ‘S–t, Ronda Rousey might kick my ass’
Mike Tyson obviously knows all about intimidation and how it can translate into dispatching fight opponents quickly with relative ease but shocking brutality. But he nevertheless — like most folks — was left in awe by the manner in which Ronda Rousey easily defeated Cat Zingano in a mere 14 seconds at UFC 184 on Feb. 28.
In fact, Iron Mike was so impressed by Rousey’s victory that he stated the UFC women’s bantamweight champion probably could successfully make a run at him.
Tyson made his complimentary comments about Rousey during an interview Thursday with Marc Lamont Hill on “HuffPo Live” (video here) after he was shown video of Manny Pacquiao saying that Rousey would beat Floyd Mayweather in an MMA fight.
“S–t, Ronda Rousey might kick my ass,” Tyson replied. “That 14 seconds the last fight — s–t, man, you got to take that seriously.”
Tyson’s high praise for Rousey did not end there.
“She’s marketed herself, and not necessarily from a publicist’s perspective,” he said. “She put in the work, too. She’s putting these people to bed, she’s tapping them out, she’s doing the 14-second thing.”
Of course, the entire debate that has ensued about whether or not Rousey could take down a male fighter — or boxer or whatever — is purely academic. Rousey emphatically stated recently that she won’t ever fight a man due to the bad message it sends in light of the domestic violence issue currently pervading pro sports and the world at large.
“I don’t think it’s a great idea to have a man hitting a woman on television,” Rousey said in an interview with The Daily Beast. “I’ll never say that I’ll lose, but you could have a girl getting totally beat up on TV by a guy—which is a bad image to put across. With all the football [domestic violence] stuff that’s been happening, not a good idea. It’s fun to theorize about and talk about, but it’s something that’s much better in theory than fact.”
