Dustin Johnson reportedly caddying for Paulina Gretzky at posh Idaho resort
Despite back-and-forth, he said-they said nature regarding the coverage of Dustin Johnson’s either self-imposed or forced absence from the PGA Tour in the coming weeks and months, reports indicate that he may not be seeking “professional help,” as his statement announcing his leave of absence suggested he intended to do. Instead, he is making sure that he is surrounding himself with loved ones and taking a break from the hectic nature and stressful rigors of the world of golf…
…by playing golf.
Multiple outlets report that Johnson has been spotted at the very posh Gozzer Ranch Golf and Lake Club near Couer d’Alene, Idaho. Johnson allegedly has been playing a lot of golf and even is spending some time caddying for fiancée Paulina Gretzky in club’s Ladies Member-Guest.
Golf Channel Insider Tim Rosaforte addressed Johnson’s reported whereabouts Wednesday on “Live from the PGA.” He stated that his sources are telling him that Johnson is in fact in Idaho with the Gretzkys, not at some inpatient treatment center.
“Most thought [the announcement] was a hint that he was going to a treatment center,” Rosaforte said. “Instead, he’s been up in Northern Idaho at Gozzer Ranch [Golf and Lake Club], hanging out with the Gretzky family, caddying for Paulina in the club’s ladies’ member-guest, and playing a lot of golf, playing almost every day.”
His golf game apparently has not suffered one iota as a consequence of all the controversy swirling around the 30-year-old.
“He shot 61 this week,” Rosaforte added. “Could have been a 59.”
A photograph that circulated (above) shortly after Johnson announced he was withdrawing from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational early last week allegedly is of Johnson playing caddy for Gretzky at the resort. The photo originally was posted to Gretzky’s Instagram account but was later pulled down.
Of course, most suspected that the “professional help” Johnson mentioned in his statement involved some sort of treatment, either inpatient or outpatient, but that does not appear to be the case. Although it certainly is possible he is being treated in some capacity at the resort in between his outing to course to caddy for Paulina and swing the sticks himself.
Subsequent reports following Johnson’s announcement alleged that his leave was not voluntary but instead was part of an imposed six-month suspension by the PGA for failing a third drug test of his career, purportedly for cocaine.
The PGA denied that Johnson had been suspended, issuing a statement last week that read, “With regard to media reports that Dustin Johnson has been suspended by the PGA Tour, this is to clarify that Mr. Johnson has taken a voluntary leave of absence and is not under a suspension from the PGA Tour.”
Johnson’s agent David Winkle has refused to comment on his client’s whereabouts, although he indicated that he is in contact with Johnson frequently, adding that the golfer is “in good spirits, and appreciates the support.”
While wiling away the days golfing and hanging out with his gal certainly sounds relaxing, a recent reported development regarding Johnson’s personal life may be making the golfer feeling a bit nervous.
According to reports, Paulina’s father, Wayne Gretzky, has told Johnson to shape up or ship off. The Gretzky family reportedly has been aware of Johnson’s off-the-course issues and offered their support as he navigates his way through his personal struggles. With that said, Papa Wayne allegedly has told his for-now future son-in-law that the wedding to his daughter is off if Johnson doesn’t clean up his act.
A lot is riding on how Johnson approaches his time away from the PGA Tour. Whether it was on his own accord or not, Johnson’s hiatus from the world of professional golf will go a long way in determining his future, both professionally and personally.
