Julian Edelman calls out Tom Brady and Gronk for ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (video)
New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman called out some big guns on Tuesday when he challenged Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, as well as fellow receiver Danny Amendola, to the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.”
Edelman posted the below video to his Facebook page on Tuesday in which he accepts his Ice Bucket Challenge while passing it along to his two superstar teammates.
For the uninitiated, the “Ice Bucket Challenge” basically involves either responding to a challenge to dump a bucket of ice water on one’s head or donating funds to ALS research. Those challenged are expected to respond within 24 hours.
If the challenge is accepted, the person doing the self-dousing are expected to post video of it while challenging others to follow suit. The intent of course being no only to raise awareness but hopefully, for those who defer, to raise some much-needed funds in the process. And just because one accepts the challenge of course does not necessarily mean he or she is precluded from donating. That would be a win-win for the movement.
It is unclear who exactly started the “Ice Bucket Challenge.” A lot of the credit, however, seems to be going to former Boston College center fielder Peter Frates, 29, who has ALS.
Whoever it was or how it came to be it is undeniable just how quickly the challenge became a viral video phenomenon online. As far as sports stars are concerned, golfers are well-represented in the initial onrush of the movement, as Rickie Fowler, Michelle Wie Keegan Bradley and Greg Norman have done it, with more and more folks getting in on the act.
That leaves us with waiting to see if Brady and/or Gronkowski accept Edelman’s challenge. Given that Edelman posted the video challenge on Tuesday, the two Patriots superstars are running out of time. Clock is ticking, boys.
