A’s have Yoenis Cespedes t-shirt giveaway scheduled days after trading him (pic)
In an instance of unfortunate happenstance that could not have been predicted all those months ago when the Oakland Athletics promotions department were organizing and scheduling ballpark giveaways, the team has an Yoenis Cespedes t-shirt giveaway scheduled for Saturday at O.co Coliseum.
Of course, the immensely popular back-to-back Home Run Derby champ was traded to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes on Thursday. So instead of celebrating a fan favorite — in part for making plays like these two cannon throws on back-to-back nights earlier this season (here and here) –being honored with a cool shirt, the first 10,000 folks through the gates on Saturday will have a memento of a player no longer with the team.
The coolest part of the shirt? It celebrates a pretty awesome nickname for Cespedes: “La Potencia,” which translates to “The Power.”

Tough timing, man. It’s certainly not the first time a team has a had a tribute night or giveaway planned for player no longer with the organization, nor will it be the last.
