Whew: Mark Sanchez clarifies comments about Philly fans being ‘a lot nicer’

Eagles Football

Mark Sanchez found himself in the middle of a self-created but somewhat overblown controversy this week when he was quoted in a New York Post report making comments that were interpreted as a shot at New York Jets fans.

Now with the Philadelphia Eagles, Sanchez finished up a media session with reporters with the comment, “The fans are a lot nicer now,” after training camp practice on Monday.

While the tone of the article was relatively tame and didn’t really make the conclusion that Sanchez was ripping Jets fans, the Post scribe who filed the report later tweeted, “Mark Sanchez on Philly vs. New York: ‘The fans are a lot nicer here.’ BOOM,” according to a New York Daily News report, thereby suggesting that Sanchez directly stated that Sanchez was praising Eagles fans at the expense of Jets fans.

Not so fast, says Sanchez.

The Eagles backup denies that was the intent behind his comment. Instead, claims Sanchez, he simply was characterizing the treatment he currently is receiving from Philly fans compared to when he visited the city as a member of the Jets.

Sanchez even took to Twitter to take the reporter to task for twisting the meaning behind his comments.

“My comments today about Philly fans being ‘nicer’ was in reference to their reaction to me now vs. the last time I played here as a Jet in 2011,” Sanchez wrote. “It had absolutely nothing to do with NY fans. I have nothing but good things to say about my time in NY and I’ve always said the fans are tremendous. It’s unfortunate that 1 reporter out of the 10 I spoke with today chose to take these comments out of context. Everyone else knew what I was talking about.”

If the statement alone was not enough, the man who will forever be known in Jets lore and live infamy for his starring role in the embarrassing “Butt Fumble” incident a few years back, even posted an image of his statement in full along with a turquoise backdrop to provide for a calming background.

The color really is soothing. It’s almost like you’re drowning in Sanchez’s elegant prose.

Anyhoo, there you go. Thankfully, with Sanchez’s clarification, we can move on with our lives now that we know that the quarterback did not besmirch the good name and sully the reputation of Jets fans. Whew. What a relief.
