Report: 15-year-old Brazil fan commits suicide following team’s World Cup loss
According to a report filed Wednesday by sportskeeda, a sports news website in Asia, a 15-year-old girl in Nepal committed suicide following Brazil’s stunning 7-1 loss to Germany in the semifinals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday.
Nepalese police reportedly told the site that Pragya Thap, a 10th-grader living in the Sunsari district of east Nepal and in the care of her grandparents as her father was traveling abroad, reportedly hanged herself in her room after she was teased by friends about the devastating loss, the worst defeat Brazil has ever suffered in World Cup play.
Via the New York Daily News:
“She was anxious to see Brazil in the final, but it went down to Germany,” Sharad Thapa, a Nepal police inspector said of the preliminary investigation, according to the website. “Some of her friends started teasing her for supporting Brazil. Later in the morning, she took an extreme measure by hanging herself in her own room.”
What a tragic story, to put it mildly. While it’s perfectly acceptable to experience a sense of schadenfreude brought on by a World Cup powerhouse suffering a humiliating defeat — on its home turf, no less — this heartbreaking incident certainly puts everything in a sobering perspective. What a terrible, terrible story.
