Topps ‘Oddity’ card includes clippings from Daniel Nava’s World Series beard (photo)
Living up to the name of the line, the latest offering from Topps’ Allen & Ginter “Oddity Relics” series of cards is a strange one, indeed. The new card features strands of hair from the clippings of the playoff beard grown by Boston Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava during the team’s run to a 2013 World Series title.
The card is the only Oddity Relic featured on the Topps series checklist released on Monday (PDF here). Only 25 of the Nava Oddity card exist and are serial-numbered to confirm authenticity.
The 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter officially arrives on Wednesday, but one of the Nava cards already has landed on eBay. As of Tuesday afternoon, 21 bids have been made on the unique card with the winning offer topping out at $162.50.
The card company’s Oddity Relics line has featured cards celebrating momentous and not-so momentous historical events from both within and outside the world of sports. Past offerings have featured pieces of the menu from the ill-fated nuptials of Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian as well as a piece of the fence from the grassy knoll made famous due to its connection to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
