Michelle Wie received flowers for U.S. Women’s Open win from Adam Sandler?
Among the many deserving accolades, well wishes and congratulatory gestures Michelle Wie was afforded in light of her U.S. Women’s Open victory last weekend, the strangest demonstration of goodwill had to be the fact that Wie reported she received congratulatory flowers from Adam Sandler.
Wie acknowledged that getting flowers from the “Happy Gilmore” star was a nice surprise.
“I got congratulatory flowers from Adam Sandler, which is awesome,” Wie said during a press conference on Thursday in advance of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship in Rogers, Ark. “I feel like that’s the biggest prize in golf, getting flowers from Happy Gilmore. You know you made it when that happens.”
Wie said she and the comedic actor played together in a Pro Junior Challenge as part of the Sony Open in Hawaii when she was 14 or 15, which is perhaps the reason why Sandler reached out to her.
Wie recalls that Sandler busted out the trademark swing of the hockey player-turned-golfer character he portrayed during the event.
“On the first hole, he Happy Gilmored it,” Wie said.
Of course he did.
Wie also stated that Arnold Palmer, Condoleezza Rice, Barbara Nicklaus and Phil Knight all sent her their best wishes, congratulating her on the big win.
But the big win after the big win had to be getting flowers from none other than Adam Sandler a/k/a Happy Gilmore. Speaking of the actor and arguably one of the best movies about golf — although there really isn’t much competition outside of “Caddyshack” — ever made, we all know what Chubbs, Happy’s sage golf coach, would have said to Wie before she took to twerking on Sunday night to celebrate her victory:
“It’s all in the hips. It’s all in the hips. It’s all in the hips. It’s all in the hips.”
Come on, that’s good stuff, man. Just easin’ the tension, baby. Just easin’ the tension!
