Derek Jeter Retirement Tour Gift Tracker: Kingdome seat, $34K watch from Cano (pics)
We have been doing our best here at SoB of chronicling the many stops on the “Derek Jeter Retirement Tour Super-Happy Funtime Bonanza,” although a few have been missed here and there, mainly out of laziness, but I digress.
Anyhoo, the latest stopoff was in Seattle as the New York Yankees had a series with the Mariners. During a pregame ceremony at Safeco Field, Jeter was honored and received some pretty nifty gifts as a sendoff.
The Yankees captain was presented with a seat from the old Kingdome, where Jeter notched his first big league career hit. He also was presented with a Safeco Field base as well as a $5,000 check made out to his Take 2 Foundation.
And then things took a bit of a personal turn when Jeter’s former Yankees teammate, Robinson Cano, presented the shortstop with a personalized watch: A Shawn Carter by Hublot model timepiece valued at approximately $34,000. Whew!
Of course, Shawn Carter is the birth name of hip hop mogul-turned-sports superagent Jay-Z, who just so happens to represent Cano through Roc Nation Sports. With that in mind, there’s a good chance Cano got the pricey timepiece at a decent markdown, so that’s nice.
Engraved upon the watch was the message, “To Derek: Thank you for showing me how to be a leader. With love and respect, RC.”
So, to recap, here is the Derek Jeter Retirement Tour Gift Tracker — for the most part — at this stage of the season:
- Chicago Cubs: No. 2 from Wrigley scoreboard
- New York Mets: Subway tile mosaic, charitable donation
- Los Angeles Angels: Personalized, pinstriped paddleboard
- Houston Astros: Golf clubs, Stetson cowboy hat and pair custom No. 2 Yankee cowboy boots
Not a bad haul. Not a bad haul at all.
