Vikings LB Chad Greenway rescues two people stuck on Twin Cities lake (video)
Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway came to the rescue of a couple stranded on the choppy waters of Lake Minnetonka on Monday.
The couple, Edward and Crystal Alexis, were touring the popular Twin Cities lake taking in the sights when the steering wheel on their boat began to malfunction. The couple had just purchased the boat the day before and were on the craft’s maiden voyage, never a good sign.
“We were looking at all the beautiful houses and all of the sudden the steering wheel wouldn’t turn and we were going in circles,” Crystal Alexis told KARE-11.
The boat was in a treacherous location, near the spillway — and a bunch of rocks jutting near and above the water surface — of Gray’s Bay Dam.
The Alexises were waiting for the water patrol to come to their assistance when Greenway happened to pass by. That’s when the Vikings linebacker came to the rescue.
The Twin Cities had been deluged with heavy rains throughout the weekend, making the conditions on many area lakes dangerous given the higher water levels. Greenway, but that didn’t stop the longtime Vikings defensive standout from coming through in the clutch.
“So, I just ran down, of course with my two little girls following behind me, trying to stay out of the way, and I figured I’d help them out. It looked like it was dangerous,” Greenway said later.
“The waves are so big and the wind is so strong today that it pushed him right into the rocks, so we had to get him off the rocks, his prop cleared out of the rope, and get him turned in the right direction,” he added.
Greenway jumped into the water and helped pull the boat to an inlet and away from the treacherous rocks. He then waited with them until patrols arrived and even helped tie-up the boat for towing.
Greenway even took it a step further after the water rescue, driving the Alexises to their car and to retrieve their boat.
Did the couple have any idea that they were rescued by a Vikings star?
“We didn’t even know, we didn’t even know,” the couple said.
Greenway joked afterward upon learning that the couple were actually Chicago Bears backers, not Vikes fans.
“Good thing he told me that after!” he said.
Hardly surprising, though. Vikings were known for their bravery and skill on the water, right?
And no, I’m not going for the easy “Chad Greenway purified himself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka” joke, either. I’m a Minnesotan, dammit.
Oops, I guess I did in fact make the “Purple Rain” reference by claiming I wouldn’t make the reference. Carry on.
