Richard Sherman breaks news of new megadeal with Seahawks on his blog

One thing is for certain about Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman. Okay, make that two things. First, he is a very, very rich man after signing an extension with the Seattle Seahawks that makes him the highest-paid corner in the league. Secondly, he’s keenly aware of how he has every right to oversee and control his own brand. And he does so with savvy and intelligence, refusing s to allow anyone else to call the shots.

Case in point: Rumors have been circulating for weeks now that the Seahawks and Sherman were working on a long-term extension. But when it came down to brass tacks as it relates to actually ending all the conjecture and breaking the news officially, Sherman did it himself by posting an announcement on his own blog.

Sherman announced that he and the Seahawks have agreed on a 4-year deal worth $57.4 million, with $40 million of that money guaranteed. A fantastic — and arguably deserved — haul.

The fiery NFL star’s write-up read as follows:

I am blessed to announce that the Seattle Seahawks and I have reached an agreement on a contract extension. The goal has always been to stay in Seattle and continue to play for the Seahawks. With this chapter closed, I can continue to focus on what is important – defending our Super Bowl Championship and being the best cornerback in the NFL.

This is a great moment for my family, foundations and the people who supported me to this point. Hard work and execution got me to this moment, the Seattle Seahawks have backed up that respect with this contract. The terms of my deal are 4 years for a total of $57.4M with $40M guaranteed. There is no other city or team that I would want to play football for.

Greatness is realized from countless hours of work, studying, practice, sacrifice and courage. This is just the beginning and I will continue to set the bar higher and higher on and off the field.

Much appreciation to the Seattle Seahawks franchise, the coaches, teammates, friends, the fans, my family and the 12s. The support does not go unnoticed and I carry that into each snap. From Compton to Stanford, 5th round draft pick to winning the Super Bowl – dare to be great.

You get out what you put in!

Well stated. And again, deserving. The guy can play, man.

Further, every defensive back in the NFL should applaud Sherman’s huge payday, as it helps set the bar for contracts for them down the road, although perhaps for not quite so much.

Even Washington Redskins corner DeAngelo Hall, who engaged in a hostile, embittered and somewhat outrageous Twitter war with Sherman earlier this year, celebrated the deal.
