Robinson Cano booed in Yankee Stadium return, has beard fondled by Derek Jeter (vids)
Robinson Cano paid his first visit on Tuesday night to Yankee Stadium since signing a big money megadeal with the Seattle Mariners, meaning fans in the Bronx for the first time had the opportunity to lustily boo a player they once cheered for when he donned the fabled pinstripes.
Because of a rainy, windy and cold spring evening, only a sparse crowd was in attendance for Cano’s return, but the dearth of butts in the seats didn’t mean those at the game didn’t make their voices heard — not surprisingly — and let Cano have it every time he stepped to the plate, raining boos down upon the second baseman.
Cano was not surprised by the reception.
“I’m not surprised,” Cano said, via MLB.com. “You’re going to get some cheers and boos. You just have to go out and play the game.”
Perhaps the fans were inspired by the bit from “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Monday night when Yankees fans booed a cardboard display featuring Cano on it only to have the ballplayer step out from behind it and surprise them. Nah, probably not.
The Yankees fans especially enjoyed Cano striking out in his first at-bat. Overall, went 1-5, striking out twice while stealing a base, scoring a run and knocking in an RBI in a 6-3 Mariners win.
Before the game, the greeting Cano received from his former teammates was as warm as the reception he received from Yankees faithful was chilly, highlighted by Derek Jeter curiously fondling Cano’s beard during an infield meet and greet.
Seriously, what was going on there?
