Atlanta Hawks commission 700-pound, 15-foot, 3D billboard of Paul Millsap (photos)
The Atlanta Hawks have commissioned the construction of an unreal billboard that pays tribute to the team’s power forward Paul Millsap.
The towering billboard, which will be erected along Interstate 85 North, a busy freeway in Atlanta, features a fifteen-foot tall, 700-pound 3-D version of the star player dunking a basketball. It will be seen by approximately 660,000 people a week, who will be instructed to text **DUNK. Doing so will lead fans to a contest that features various prizes involving Millsap and the Hawks.
The team contacted Atlanta-based company Chisel 3D to construct the monstrosity, which is built out of steel and foam.
“There’s not that many people doing 3D billboard advertising,” Gary Bystrom, Chisel 3D CEO said. “So this should make an impact.”
Indeed. Both the Hawks and Millsap are impressed with the end result.
“We’ve always done a fair amount of outdoor signage,” said Hawks’ senior vice president of marketing Peter Sorckoff. “We’re competing against a lot of other options in the entertainment space and our managing partner Bruce Levenson wanted us to do something big to blow people away.”

Millsap, in his eighth NBA season and first with the Hawks after spending the first seven seasons with the Utah Jazz, is averaging 17.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He says he’s primarily focused on securing a spot in the postseason with his teammates — the Hawks currently sit in eighth place in the Eastern Conference — says the concept greatly intrigued him from the start.
“But this billboard,” Millsap said, “is something I’ve got to go see.”
