Panthers fans protesting Steve Smith’s release (but hey, cheap hot dogs!) (pics)

With a little fanfare and a minimal amount of pomp and circumstance, the Carolina Panthers put an end to Steve Smith’s storied 13-year run with the organization on Thursday, cutting ties with the wide receiver but releasing him.

The move was expected — Smith’s agent said on Wednesday that Smith has played his last snap in a Panthers uniform — but that certainly does not mean that Panthers Nation is looking upon the release of one of the team’s biggest and most prolific stars fondly.

Fans have begun to assemble outside Bank of America Stadium, armed with signs (better than torches and pitchforks), to protest Smith’s release. Among the messages: “Not Everyone Forgot The Meaning Of Loyalty.” Indeed.

But with the gray cloud currently hanging over the Panthers fans comes at least some semblance of a silver lining. A Charlotte-based hot dog joint is taking a stand against the tyranny of evil men pulling the strings at Panthers HQ by offering up hot dogs at a bargain price.

Now that’s solidarity, folks. “HELL NO WE WON’T GO! HELL NO WE WON’T GO (EXCEPT FOR CHEAP DOGS FROM JJ’s RED HOTS)! BETTER YET, BRING THEM DOWN TO THE STADIUM!”
