RG3 ($100K), Charles Tillman ($10K) donate funds to hometown school district for athletic gear
Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III reportedly has donated $100,000 in sports equipment and athletic gear to the Copperas Cove Independent School District in Texas. A military kid — both his parents were in the Army — Rg3’s family moved around during his youngest years, and the Griffins finally settled in Copperas Grove when he was about seven years old.
According to a report in the Kileen Daily Herald:
The Washington Redskins quarterback and high-profile alumni of Cove donated more than $100,000 worth of athletic gear to the Copperas Cove Independent School District.
Griffin, who won the Heisman Trophy while playing at Baylor, partnered with Adidas to donate uniforms for the school’s football team, as well as the boys basketball and track teams.
The report also adds that it accepted a donation of $10,000 from Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman, who attended Copperas Cove High School. Tillman’s donation, in conjunction with Riddell Equipment, reportedly will be used solely to provide the football team new helmets.
The report chronicles the considerable athletic accomplishments and on-field, adolescent exploits of the two NFL stars as follows:
Griffin led the Bulldawgs football team to back-to-back Division I-4A state championship games in 2006 and 2007 — the only two state-title appearances in school history. The one-time Olympic hopeful also helped the track team secure its only state title, winning gold medals in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles in 2007.
Tillman was all-state honorable mention honoree at wide receiver as a senior for the Bulldawgs in 1998, when they returned to the playoffs for the first time in 38 years.
Tillman, already a man well-known for his charitable ways and community outreach initiatives, is coming off being named the recipient of the Walter Payton Man of the Year by the NFL. Griffin is having a good week in bolstering his public image as well — albeit in a more amusing way — as news surfaced that he replied to a Redskins fan’s wedding invite. While RG3 regretfully declined the invite, he did send the fan an autographed football card.
