Derek Jeter posts lengthy statement on Facebook indicating 2014 will be his last season (pic)

There you have it. According to the man, the myth, the legend himself, this season will be the last one Derek Jeter will suit up and don the famed New York Yankees pinstripes — or any other uniform, for that matter — as a player. Yep, Derek Jeter will retire following the conclusion of the 2014 MLB season.

A lengthy and eloquent statement was posted on Wednesday to Jeter’s official Facebook page indicating that the time has come. Sadly, it’s the end of the road for one of the most popular, successful, classiest and beloved players in the history of Major League Baseball.

Five World Series championships. Thirteen-time All-Star. Five-time Silver Slugger and Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner. 3,316 hits (and counting).

It was a good run. Make that a remarkable, nearly unparalleled and historic run. It’s hard to believe that the career of “The Captain” is in its twilight.
