Andrew Bynum would get kicked out of Cavaliers practices for being a ‘chucker’
According to a lengthy and insightful piece on the Cleveland Cavaliers from Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, Andrew Bynum didn’t really ingratiate himself to teammates and the coaching staff during practices following the date his contract with the team became guaranteed.
Shockingly — not really — Bynum became something of a malcontent rather quickly after his 2013-14 salary became guaranteed. The Cavaliers took a flier on Bynum after the center spent a disastrous season with the Philadelphia 76ers — something he said he “didn’t feel bad at all” about — signing the high-potential, talented but enigmatic big man to a low-risk 2-year, $24 million deal.
But the reason behind why the Cavaliers decided enough was enough with Bynum and suspended him is beyond comical: He reportedly would jack up shots instantly upon touching the ball, no matter where was on the court. Yep, for lack of a more amusing way to put it, Bynum allegedly was a “chucker”.
Only Bynum never made it to the early January guarantee date for his full $12.5 million salary in 2013-14, and self-destructed. He stopped trying on the floor, and became a disruptive presence in practices. Before Bynum was thrown out of his final practice and suspended, he was shooting the ball every time he touched it in a practice scrimmage, sources said – from whatever remote part of the court he had caught the ball.
Ha. Awesomely reprehensible. These disrespectful meltdowns and wanton disregard for the team left the Cavs little choice but to part ways, which the team did by trading him and future draft considerations to the Chicago Bulls for Luol Deng on Jan. 7 (Bynum subsequently was released by the Bulls and later signed with the Indiana Pacers on Feb. 1).
But seriously, that would have been awesome to see: Bynum just throwing up shots from everywhere. What a piece of work. Things all went downhill after he decided to cut his wacky hair after signing with the Cavaliers.
Okay, that’s not ever remotely true. This Bynum guy has been a hot mess for years. But not to mention his crazy-ass hairdo is as irresponsible and rude as jacking up shots every time a player touches the ball in practice.
