It’s a boy! Panthers’ Steve Smith posts ultrasound, announces he’s having a son (photo)
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith took to Twitter on Friday to proudly announce that he and his wife Angie will soon be proud parents of a newborn son.
Steve and Angie, already parents to three children, will welcome Steve Smith Jr. when the bouncing baby boy is born. That nugget of information comes courtesy of Smith’s tweet, which announced, “It’s official. This year the name on the back of my jersey will read Smith Sr.”

As Gridiron Grit points out, the NFL did alter the rules to allow Jr. and Sr. and other additions to jerseys, so Smith conceivably could have “Smith Sr.” on the back of his jersey come next season.
NFL Nation adds that Panthers officials have indicated that Smith has not yet made the request to add Sr. to his jersey, but there’s no reason to believe the wideout won’t go ahead with it.
Little Steve Smith Jr. would have some pretty big shoes to fill if he ever chooses to follow in his daddy’s choice of profession. The undersized wide receiver has enjoyed a wildly productive career, hauling in 836 receptions for 12,197 yards (good for 19th all-time) and 67 touchdowns over his 13-year NFL career.
In this day and age, perhaps tweeting ultrasound photos in order to announce the gender of a soon-to-be-born baby should be considered the norm, but does anyone else find it a somewhat strange thing to do? Maybe it’s just me. Of course, I am old. To each their own, I guess, and ultimately it’s not really the biggest deal in the world.
In any event, congrats to the Smith family.
