When one thinks of Christmas — in particular joyous tidings of Yuletide cheer by way of music — one instantly thinks of Bootsy Collins, right? I know I do.
So it only makes perfect sense that Collins has a Christmas-themed song dedicated to Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. Sung to the tune of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” the repeated playings of “Peyton Manning’s Passing Your Way” is sure to become a holiday tradition, a staple on the HiFi in ever NFL fan’s home.
Collins, known for his early work with James Brown but most famous for his work with George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic (although I’ll always treasure and remember fondly his collaboration with Deee-Lite on “Groove is in the Heart”), put this tune together for “Sports Illustrated for Kids,” giving the combination of Bootsy Collins, a Peyton Manning Christmas song and a kids sports magazine the trifecta of head-scratching weird. All wrapped up in a nifty holiday bow, no less.
Really, there isn’t much that can be said except hop in Bootsy’s funky holiday spaceship and enjoy the ride.
Weird, wild stuff. All I know is I’m eagerly awaiting Earth, Wind & Fire’s rendition of “Deck the Halls” inspired by Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker’s six field goal performance on Monday entitled “Kick the Balls.” Should be a funky and holiday cheer-filled performance.
