Nike releases Transformers-themed Calvin Johnson shoes that come with Megatron action figure
It was only a matter of time until some marketing wizards came up with this brilliant gimmick that pairs Calvin Johnson’s “Megatron” nickname, his affiliation with Nike and a sure-to-be collectible.
In a brilliant partnership between toymaker Hasbro and Nike, Detroit Lions all-world wide receiver Calvin Johnson now has his own TRANSFORMERS-themed shoe that will come with a Megatron action figure when purchased.
Named the Nike CJ81 Megatron Trainer Max, the shoe features the DECEPTICON logo and is explained as follows on NikeInc.com:
The Nike CJ81 Megatron Trainer’s purple upper gives the shoe a robotic, armored look, while the red accents refer back to the secondary color of the action figure. Under the forefoot strap, Johnson’s favorite MEGATRON quote, “Show no mercy,” appears. It’s a reminder of the athletic mindset needed to succeed at the highest level, and the perseverance required to rise to the top. The metallic silver heel of the trainer carries a classic TRANSFORMERS grid pattern as well as a bold, iconic DECEPTICON logo at center.
A few photos of the shoes:
Nike also is releasing the Megatron Nike Air Trainer SC II, which features a “more muted inspiration from the TRANSFORMERS character,” but the real star of the soon-to-be released pair of shoes is that it will come packaged with a special edition Megatron action figure.
Produced in collaboration with Hasbro, the 5-inch purple and red TRANSFORMERS MEGATRON action figure inspired by Calvin Johnson mirrors the cues of his signature Nike CJ81 Megatron Trainer Max. The distinctive red cruciform pattern found on the toebox and upper of the trainer are utilized on the arms and feet of the figure. Johnson’s signature appears alongside the iconic DECEPTICON shield on MEGATRON’S chest. In robot mode, the MEGATRON figure is designed to be broad yet agile, and the iconic “wing” jet conversion is meant to mirror Johnson’s speed and power.
And now, a look at that nifty little action figure:
Pretty sweet. If only I engaged in any kind of athletic activity that required such a fancy pair of sneakers. I guess I’ll have to wait and see if the action figures pop up on eBay. Actually, that’s a sure-thing, without a doubt.
And meanwhile, Terrell Owens is not only still claiming he can make an ill-advised NFL comeback, he’s trying to orchestrate a deal between New Balance and Tonka to create a pair of GoBots-themed sneakers. Or something.
